Ian Westleigh Allen, 23, has been found guilty of first degree murder for stabbing to death his former girlfriend’s mother, Barbara Mullenix, in the family’s Huntington Beach condo in 2006. The prosecution originally considered giving Allen a sentencing enhancement for personal use of a deadly weapon -- in this case, one or more knives, but declined to pursue it. Allen faces 25 years to life in prison, and will be sentenced Nov. 14. Rachael Scarlett Mullenix, the victim’s daughter and Allen’s 19-year-old former girlfriend, was already convicted of first degree murder for the same crime in July.

The dramatic trial of Rachael Mullenix, charged with the brutal stabbing of her mother when she was 17, came to a close last week with a first-degree murder conviction. But the trial of her former boyfriend Ian Allen looms in the near future, and Mullenix’s jury didn’t find she held the murder weapon. Mullenix is headed to a sentencing hearing Sept. 5; her conviction carries a sentence of 25 years to life. Allen, who Mullenix claimed was the sole killer during her testimony, was initially scheduled for jury trial July 11, but it was pushed back because her trial wasn’t finished.

Ian Allen, accused of murder, was slow to anger and never violent, his parents told jurors Thursday. “He is the least aggressive out of my three boys,” father Clyde Allen said on the witness stand. “Out of the three, he would be most easily characterized as gentle, yes. He sometimes reacts with temper, but it takes more to get him angry.” Clyde Allen went on to say he had never seen his son react violently when angry. The trial of Ian Allen, 23, of Huntington Beach, continued this week.

Barbara Mullenix’s body washed ashore near the Newport Harbor Yacht Club on Sept.

Rachael Mullenix watched her boyfriend kill her mother, then helped him clean up the crime scene because she was in shock and afraid of what he might do to her, she testified during her murder trial Wednesday. But the prosecution hammered away at her assertions she meant no harm and that then-boyfriend Ian Allen was the one in control. In her cross-examination of Mullenix, prosecutor Sonia Balleste repeatedly asked the defendant if she manipulated people—which Mullenix denied—then asked her to confirm various actions in her past.

The woman accused of murdering her mother in Huntington Beach and dumping her in Newport Beach waters at the age of 17 told jurors Tuesday that her only plan for the fatal night was to run away, not kill anyone. "I was gonna wait until my mom was asleep," defendant Rachael Mullenix said. "In the middle of the night, probably one or two. I had a backpack. He was going to pick me up. We were going to go to Florida, we were going to drive all the way there." Prosecutors say Mullenix, now 19, got boyfriend Ian Allen to help her stab mother Barbara Mullenix to death with multiple knives, following an incident in which Barbara Mullenix grounded her for breaking curfew and forbade the two to date.

Like many teenage girls, Huntington Beach resident Rachael Mullenix told her mother she hated her and didn’t want to live with her anymore, according to prosecutors. But then, prosecutors said, Mullenix and her 21-year-old boyfriend made sure of it — with several knives. The prosecution made opening arguments and called a few witnesses Wednesday in the murder and conspiracy trial of Mullenix, who turned away as Deputy Dist. Atty. Sonia Balleste showed jurors her mother a picture of Barbara Mullenix’s slashed body as it appeared when it washed up at the Newport Harbor Yacht Club on Sept.

A Huntington Beach woman who, with help from her boyfriend, killed her mother two years ago and dumped the body into Newport Harbor before running away with him, insisted she was innocent Friday as a judge sentenced her to a maximum of 25 years to life in prison. Rachael Mullenix, 19, was convicted in July of taking part in her mother’s slaying. Her mother, Barbara Mullenix, was found wrapped in a bloody blanket with a butter knife stuck in her eye and floating in Newport Harbor Sept.
