Amid testimony from witnesses ranging from DNA experts to police investigators to the defendant’s own father, the trial of teenage murder suspect Rachael Scarlett Mullenix continued throughout the week. Prosecutors were still calling witnesses in their attempt to convince jurors that Mullenix was a lying manipulator who persuaded boyfriend Ian Allen to help her kill her mother, Barbara Mullenix. Not all the prosecution’s witnesses cooperated in that aim. Bruce Mullenix, who was divorced from Barbara but let them both live in his Huntington Beach condo, told jurors last week that his slain ex-wife made threats and acted abusive when she’d had too much to drink.

1. Debbie Cook Former Huntington Beach Mayor Debbie Cook had a busy year. Aside from leading the City Council, she also ran a high-profile campaign to unseat a 20-year incumbent, Congressman Dana Rohrabacher. From the start of the campaign, Cook acknowledged the uphill battle and said her goal was to foster a debate and force Rohrabacher to defend his seat. Cook ended up losing by almost 23,000 votes, and expressed regret that in a gerrymandered district, the issues were not debated as well as she would have liked.

A Huntington Beach woman who, with help from her boyfriend, killed her mother two years ago and dumped the body into Newport Harbor before running away with him, is headed to prison on a first-degree murder conviction, but still maintains she didn’t commit the crime. Rachael Mullenix, 19, was convicted in July of taking part in her mother’s slaying. Mullenix insisted she was innocent Friday as a judge sentenced her to a maximum of 25 years to life in prison. Her mother, Barbara Mullenix, was found wrapped in a bloody blanket with a butter knife stuck in her eye and floating in Newport Harbor on Sept.

Depending on whether you listened to the prosecution or defense, Rachael Mullenix is either a manipulative killer and a liar who used her boyfriend to help her knock off her mom, or she is the abused victim of her violent beau and only helped him cover up a murder because she didn’t know how else to cope with a shocking act. That’s what jurors now have to decide, as they have gone into deliberation this week in search of a verdict....

Like many teenage girls, Huntington Beach resident Rachael Mullenix told her mother she hated her and didn’t want to live with her anymore, according to prosecutors. But then, prosecutors said, Mullenix and her 21-year-old boyfriend made sure of it — with several knives. The prosecution made opening arguments and called a few witnesses Wednesday in the murder and conspiracy trial of Mullenix, who turned away as Deputy Dist. Atty. Sonia Balleste showed jurors her mother a picture of Barbara Mullenix’s slashed body as it appeared when it washed up at the Newport Harbor Yacht Club on Sept.

With two murder trials ending in first-degree murder convictions, the former couple found guilty of killing a mother who threatened to keep them apart is expected to spend decades behind bars. A Huntington Beach man was convicted last week of killing his former girlfriend’s mother, in what prosecutors called a conspiracy between young people in love. After deliberations since the beginning of last week, jurors came back with a verdict Sept. 18: Ian Westleigh Allen, 23, was found guilty of first-degree murder.
