Taking the concept of teamwork to heart last Saturday, the Ice Breakers opened up the 2002 AYSO Region 117 fall playoffs with a 3-1 victory over the Patriots at a rain-soaked Wardlow Field in Huntington Beach. Matthew Bordas set the pace for the Ice Breakers early when he drove the field before delivering a sharp pass to Matthew Steinhaus, who drilled the ball into the net for a 1-0 lead. Defender Nick Frens and center halfback Gavin Perdomo each had key takeaways, and Trevor Verone made a terrific mid-air grab and save in goal during the first period to key the Ice Breakers defensively.

Matthew Steinhaus scored two goals and assisted a third Saturday to lead the Ice Breakers past the Raptors, 4-1, in an AYSO Region 117 boys' Under-10 Division match. Trevor Verone scored the match's first goal, shooting into the net off a cross by Steinhaus. It became 2-0 right before the first quarter ended when Steinhaus scored from the right side of the field. The Raptors retaliated in the second period on a goal by Matthew Stickler. Steinhaus pushed the Ice Breakers' cushion back to a two-goal lead when he scored in the second half on a nice pass by Gavin Perdomo.

The Lightning, a girls' Under-17 Division Silver soccer team, stretched their unbeaten streak to five games with a pair of ties. The Lightning first fought the Laguna Hills Storm to a 2-2 tie, then the Irvine Lasers to a 1-1 tie. In the Laguna Hills game, Janet Peterson scored both Lightning goals and Megan Bell recorded one assist. Against Irvine, Peterson picked up an assist, feeding Caitlin McGinnis for the Lightning's lone goal. Gena Johnson came up with 18 total saves in the two matches as the Lightning ran their record to 4-1-2.

The Region 143 boys' under-16 Plus soccer team notched its 20th victory of the season last weekend and capped an unbeaten season by defeating Tustin, 3-2, to win the AYSO Area 11 division playoff tournament. Region 143 netted all three of its goals in the opening half of play. Yuto Someya scored the first goal, and Nick Lopez scored on a hard shot from the right side in the 16th minute for a 2-0 lead. Andrew Long, off a well-placed corner kick by Franco Macchia, scored the third goal.

Jordon Corwin and Casey Taylor scored goals in the final period where the Predators defense recorded a shutout, and it added up to a 4-3 victory over the Puckhogs in a Campbell Division match at Coast 2 Coast Inline Hockey Center. The goal was the second of the match for Corwin who also scored in the second period. Christopher Bos-teruya also scored and Austin Rodriguez and Connor McCormack each had an assist. Ryan Beardshear had 14 saves. Simon Jaeger scored first off an assist from Matthew Legrand to give the Puckhogs a 1-0 lead, and Legrand scored his team's final two goals.

The Purple Piranhas, a girls' Under-10 Division soccer team, posted consecutive shutout victories last weekend in AYSO Region 117 play. The Purple Piranhas first downed the Cool Kickers, 3-0, and then came back to topple the Mean Green Fighting Machine, 1-0, in a pair of matches at Gisler School in Fountain Valley. In the 3-0 win, Jillian Torrence scored two goals, and Delaney Glasgow scored once, each set up by strong mid-field passing and assists by Emily Bush and Katie Philipson.

The Quick Chicks collected their fourth victory of the fall season last weekend by defeating the Blue Crush, 4-2, in girls' AYSO Region 117 under-12 division action. Finding themselves in a 1-0 halftime hole, the Quick Chicks responded with a pair of third period goals and two more in the fourth quarter to pull out the victory. Second half goals went to Pouneh Radparvar, Kimberly Kurdziel, Alex Long and Haley Townsend. Alison Hensley and Kristy Verone each had an assist.

The Lightning, a girls' under-17 Silver team, opened it season last Saturday with a 3-1 victory over San Gabriel Valley in a Coast Soccer League match played at Pasadena. Janet Peterson's first half goal gave the Lightning a 1-1 tie at the intermission, and second half goals by Lauren Stimmler and another by Peterson gave the squad the win. Keeper Gena Johnson and sweeper Danae Lucas anchored the defense for the Lightning who also received key contributions from Megan Bell, Tara Fox, Nikki Freiborg, Jill Hribar, Caitlin McGinnis, Hilary Pohlman, Lindsey Rodgers, Beth Santiago, Samantha Serrano, Courtney Taniguchi and Krista Thompson.

Hayley Townsend scored her third goal of the match in overtime Saturday to lift the Quick Chicks to a 4-3 victory over the Blue Crush in AYSO Region 117 girls' Under-12 Division soccer playoff action. With the second tied at 3-3 at the end of regulation play, Townsend netted her third goal with less than a minute to play in the overtime. From there, the defense of sweeper Kristy Verone, fullbacks Braelynn Snook and Pouneh Radparvar and goalie Karlee Hodgeman prevented the Blue Crush from retaliating to lock up the victory.
