The Battle at the Beach passing tournament title was won by La Habra High. The Highlanders on Saturday capped a 6-0 day by holding off Centennial of Corona, 25-24, to win the 12th annual tournament hosted by Edison. La Habra quarterback Cody Clements, who committed last week to Washington State, hit receiver Mark Yackey late in the game for what turned out to be the winning points. The Highlanders secured the title only when safety Anthony Baca broke up a two-point conversion pass at the end of the game.

Three Huntington Beach boys’ basketball teams came into Tuesday night’s CIF quarterfinals with dreams of a title. Now, Ocean View High is left to win that title — or in the Seahawks’ case, go back-to-back. The defending CIF champion Seahawks withstood a late La Habra rally to win, 67-59, in a Division III-AA quarterfinal at Ocean View. The top-seeded Seahawks play No. 5 Palm Springs in the semifinals at 7 p.m. Friday at Mater Dei High. The game is considered a home game for Ocean View, but semifinal games must be played at an alternate site.

Every time the Edison High football team played this summer, it won. And, while summer results don?t guarantee anything as far as Sunset League titles, it was obvious Coach Dave White was happy after Edison won its ?Battle at the Beach? passing tournament Saturday afternoon. Edison won its host tournament for the third straight year after topping Oaks Christian, 20-6, in the final. The Chargers had topped JSerra in the quarterfinals and Los Alamitos in the semifinals after winning pool-play games against Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks, Chaparral of Temecula and La Habra.
