HUNTINGTON BEACH - Dave White could only shake his head as he crossed midfield at Huntington Beach High's Sheue Field late Thursday night. But as the veteran Edison High football coach slowed his pace, he allowed himself to break into an uneasy smile. "I've lost so many tough games to John Barnes and Los Al over the years, so I guess it's our turn tonight," White said moments after Edison withstood a frantic finish and a last-ditch drive by defending champion Los Alamitos, to come away with a key, 10-7 victory on the opening night of the Sunset League race.

LONG BEACH — Dave White had been through several of these battles before. Halfway through Friday's crucial Sunset League game between Edison and Los Alamitos, the veteran head coach of the Chargers said he wasn't surprised at the low-scoring affair. Through the first 24 minutes of action, the teams were scoreless. Midway through the third quarter, his team was down a touchdown. "We've lost plenty of close games to them, and we knew this would be another tough one," White said.

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Edison High senior Courtney Gonzales called it contagious hitting, what the Chargers softball team displayed Thursday afternoon in its Sunset League win over Los Alamitos. By the end of the game, though, it was the Griffins who were likely feeling sick. Edison pounded the Los Al pitching, on its way to a big 12-2 victory in five innings that brought Edison into a tie for second place in league. Gonzales did plenty of the damage, going three for four with a double and three RBIs.

Only a half-game separated the top two teams in the Sunset League girls' soccer title chase when Edison played against visiting Los Alamitos Tuesday. By the time the final horn of the key contest had sounded on a cold night, the league's top two sports remained the same. Edison took a first-half lead on Los Al, but the Griffins scored the equalizing goal in the second half, and the teams played to their second 1-1 tie score of the season. It was the same score the teams produced when they met on Jan. 8. Junior Mackenzie Cerda scored for Edison, ranked sixth in CIF Southern Section Division 1, in both games.

HUNTINGTON BEACH — The Marina High boys’ basketball team was in an unfamiliar position, with a chance to knock off defending league champion Los Alamitos with a basket. Shooting the three-ball, though? Plenty familiar for Vikings senior Dane Okuda. Okuda buried a three-pointer from the left wing with two seconds left Friday night, the winning basket as the Vikings stunned the Griffins, 67-66. "I thought [senior point guard Tyler James] was going to take it and he just passed it," Okuda said.

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Eric Lo learned plenty about the character of his Huntington Beach High football team in just a few hours. A week ago, the Oilers let a big one slip away at Newport Harbor. The setback stung for a day or so, Lo said, but the team went back to work and turned their focus to Los Alamitos. Friday on their home turf at Cap Sheue Field, they responded big-time and put last week's disappointment behind them with a 28-7 victory over the Griffins, ranked No. 4 in the CIF Southern Section Southwest Division.

HUNTINGTON BEACH - Kendra Wood took pause afterward, searching for that little something extra to say. The Edison assistant softball coach was attempting to describe a key sequence that occurred - or rather, never materialized, for the Chargers, during the middle stages of their Thursday showdown against Los Alamitos. "That fourth inning, not being able to get it done... " Wood said, before tailing off and going silent. "We just needed that extra hit, that sacrifice fly," she continued, still trying to sum up a crucial turning point in the game that came in the fourth inning. "Something.

The start to the 2011 Sunset League football race doesn't get any bigger than this. Edison and Los Alamitos, two teams considered to be front-runners for the league title, clash Thursday when the Chargers host the defending champion Griffins at 7 p.m. at Huntington Beach High's Sheue Field. It's also Edison's homecoming game. "Obviously, it's a huge game," Edison Coach Dave White said. "We've had 13 days to prepare for this and right now, this is the most important part of the season for everyone.

Huntington Beach High girls' volleyball coach Craig Pazanti knew that in order for his team to have success in Tuesday's Sunset League showdown against top-ranked Los Alamitos, the Oilers would have to prevent the Griffins from taking the early lead. "It's something we worked on in practice for the past 2 1/2 weeks, since we last played them," he explained after Tuesday's match. "We had a game plan set but we didn't execute on any of those things we had worked on. " In a match that determined the 2013 Sunset champion, visiting Los Alamitos took command early and went on to claim the crown by sweeping the Oilers, 25-18, 25-21, 25-17.

Dave White knows just how special is the Battle for the Bell football game between rivals Edison and Fountain Valley. White has played in the game, worked it as an assistant coach and for the last 28 years, has been head coach at Edison. The veteran coach also knows how special it is to win this game, and doing so, by shutout. Actually, Friday turned out to be the third time since 2005 that Edison has earned a shutout victory against Fountain Valley. The Chargers' defense put on a spectacular performance at sold-out LeBard Stadium at Orange Coast College and as a result, Edison went on to claim a 24-0 win. It was the ninth-straight Bell Game triumph for Edison, and 18th in the contest for White, who is now 18-10 as head coach against the Barons.

In forging a three-game winning streak over the past three weeks, the Edison High football team took care of the football. Thursday night at Huntington Beach High's Cap Sheue Field, the Chargers couldn't hang on to the pigskin, and it cost them an important Sunset League game. And, the final result sent the league race into a wide-open affair. In a low-scoring slugfest between two teams ranked in the CIF Southern Section Southwest Division, fifth-ranked Los Alamitos climbed back into the league title chase by squeezing out a 16-10 victory, knocking second-ranked Edison out of first place in the process.

It's going to be interesting, this final week, of the Sunset League girls' basketball race. There are co-leaders in the title chase, and another team, just one game behind them, heading into the last three games of the league schedule. On Tuesday, Los Alamitos moved into a first-place tie with Edison by using a big second half to upend the host Chargers, 63-56. In two other league games, Huntington Beach survived against Marina, 53-50, and Fountain Valley overcame a cold night from the floor to subdue Newport Harbor, 52-30.

The lead in the Sunset League girls' soccer race belongs to one team this week. A week ago, Edison and Los Alamitos shared the league's top spot. After results from games played Jan. 17 and Monday, that lead now belongs only to Los Al. The Chargers (4-0-2 in league) trails the Griffins (5-0-1) by a half-game in the league standings. Edison, ranked seventh in CIF Southern Section Division 1, fell from a tie for the top spot on Jan. 17 after playing Huntington Beach to a 1-1 tie. On Monday, the Chargers picked up a 2-1 victory over Newport Harbor, getting two scores in the second half from Mackenzie Cerda.

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Timmy Lopes started things for Edison Tuesday, then polished things off. Lopes, a senior, opened the scoring and took to the mound in the late stages of Edison's CIF Southern Section Division 1 wild-card baseball game against Chaparral, and his book-end performances capped a 2-0 victory for the host Chargers. He hit a first-inning home run and later came on in relief of starting pitcher Tyler Jones to close out the final 1 2/3 innings. Lopes struck out three of the six batters he faced.
