Edison stayed in a share of the Sunset League softball lead by picking up a victory Tuesday and Ocean View scored a key road win to take hold of sole possession of first place in the Golden West League. Edison was a 5-2 winner over rival Fountain Valley. The Chargers, ranked fourth in CIF Southern Section Division 1, used home runs by Maddy Hickman and Jessica Plaza, and two hits apiece from sisters Karley and Ali Wester to get the win. Junior Sammy Cordova went the distance, struck out eight and improved to 20-3.

The Sunset League baseball title chase took another dramatic turn last week, the results of which left three teams atop the league standings. When last week's two-game schedule concluded Friday, Edison, Marina and Los Alamitos all had a piece of the Sunset lead, each with a 6-3 record. Ocean View continued to surge in the Golden West League race by twice defeating Orange in the past week. Local teams were scheduled to play Wednesday, but scores weren't available at press time.

Huntington Beach started the second half of Sunset League boys' volleyball action Tuesday with another sweep and maintained its status as the league's top team. Sixth-ranked Huntington took a 25-16, 25-17, 25-15 victory from visiting Fountain Valley. Also Tuesday, second-place Newport Harbor scored a 30-28, 25-19, 25-15 win from Edison and Los Alamitos outlasted Marina, 25-23, 25-21, 15-25, 25-18. Huntington improved to 6-0 in league and 16-3 overall after sweeping visiting Fountain Valley for the second time this season.

Edison and Los Alamitos stayed at the head of the class in the Sunset League softball race Tuesday by picking up impressive victories. The fifth-ranked Chargers came up with 11 hits and posted a 10-0 victory over visiting Huntington Beach in a game called after five innings. In other Sunset action, 13 innings were needed to decide the Fountain Valley-Marina game, and it was the host Vikings who emerged with a 5-4 victory. Los Alamitos blanked Newport Harbor, 6-0, to stay with Edison atop the league standings.

The 2012 Sunset League softball race got underway Tuesday and Edison, Fountain Valley and Los Alamitos scored opening-day victories. Edison, ranked No. 9 in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 poll, pummeled visiting Newport Harbor, 18-0, in a game called after five innings by the mercy rule. Sammy Cordova (6-0) tossed a two-hitter and the Chargers ran up 11 hits. Jessica Plaza homered with two runs batted in, Courtney Leyba went two for two with a double and three RBIs, Mercedes O'Connor went two for three with a triple and two RBIs, Nicole Zapotoczny had two RBIs and Casey Africano, Carissa Sherman, Sarah Baca and Lizabelle Talataina each drove in a run. Fountain Valley was a 5-0 winner at Huntington Beach.

The Huntington Beach boys' soccer team posted a pair of second-half goals Friday to knock off visiting Marina, 2-0. The loss was the first in six Sunset League games for the Vikings, who fell to 4-1-1 and out of first place. Yobany Garcia and Keith Fronk scored goals and Jairo Rosales and James Mossembekker each had an assist for the Oilers (1-5), who won for the first time in league and avenged a 3-0 loss to Marina on Jan. 4. Fountain Valley took over the top spot in the Sunset standings after picking up a 1-0 overtime victory over visiting Newport Harbor on Friday.

Edison picked up a big victory in Sunset League play and Ocean View kept its Golden West League record perfect by earning wins Tuesday in girls' soccer action. Edison exploded for three second-half goals against visiting Marina and went on to shut out the Vikings, 4-0. Mackenzie Cerda scored twice, Angelisa Cortez had a goal and two assists, Kelsey McKay scored once and both Brooke Lillywhite and Karly Freeman had an assist. Chargers goalies Natalie McNeely and Alison Jahansouz each had a save and combined for the shutout.

The Sunset League's top spot was on the line Oct. 13 when second-ranked Edison hosted top-ranked Los Alamitos, and the key CIF Southern Section Division 1-AA girls' volleyball match didn't disappoint. It was the Griffins who survived a torrid, five-set affair, 12-25, 25-18, 25-21, 18-25, 15-13. Cassie Strickland had 25 kills and 19 digs, Tyler Davis had 19 kills and Allie Schuck added 14 digs for the Chargers.
