Twins David and Travis Wear, residents of Huntington Beach and seniors at Mater Dei High, have been selected to the 2009 McDonald?s All-American High School boys? basketball game. The Wear brothers will play for the West in the April 1 game at the BankUnited Center in Miami. The game will be televised live on ESPN. Tipoff is 8 p.m. ET. Next year, the Wears ? both forwards ? will play at the University of North Carolina. David Wear scored 19 points and Travis Wear had 10 points Tuesday to help get top-ranked Mater Dei past visiting Rancho Verde, 72-65, in a CIF Southern Section Division I-AA quarterfinal game.

The Tournament of Champions, one of Orange County's premiere boys' basketball tournaments, will run from Dec. 10-15 and is hosted by Ocean View High. Sixteen teams will vie for the 2001 title, including host Ocean View and Fountain Valley. Four consolation bracket tournament games will be held at Mater Dei High in Santa Ana. The tournament championship is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 15. Below are the first round matchups, with day and time included.

The North Huntington Beach Black girls? Under-16 soccer team scored an impressive home field victory Saturday by defeating previously unbeaten Fram CQ White, 1-0. With the win over the leaders of the highly competitive Silver West bracket of the league, NHB Black moved into a four-way tie for second place in the standings. The win also avenged an earlier loss this season to Fram. With 10 minutes to play, Natalie Seckel (Mater Dei High) split the Fram defense with a pass to Devon Shinn (Marina High)

They gave Mater Dei a game, and not a lot of teams could say that in girls? basketball this season. But when the final buzzer sounded, it was Edison on the short end of a season-ending 62-46 score March 12 in the CIF State Division II Southern California regional semifinals. Brea Olinda has been a wrecking ball in the CIF Southern Section Division II-AA girls? basketball playoffs. In its four games, the top-seeded Ladycats have outscored opponents, 339-131. But Edison, which advanced to the final with a 45-37 semifinal win over Mira Costa on Saturday, has also been playing well. SANTA ANA — Anthony Brown and Avery Johnson are the players who receive the most publicity for the Ocean View High boys’ basketball team, and deservedly so. But if senior center Ryan Okwudibonye keeps playing this way, the Seahawks are going to be awfully tough to beat. Okwudibonye picked a perfect time to have one of his best games of the year, Friday night in a CIF Southern Section Division III-AA semifinal game. He had 15 points and a career-high 18 rebounds as Ocean View topped Palm Springs, 70-51, at Mater Dei High.

Ocean View has not played Foothill this year in boys’ basketball, but Coach Jim Harris said he’s seen plenty headed into the CIF Southern Section Division III-AA championship game, set for 8:15 Saturday night at the Honda Center in Anaheim. “They have a tremendous point guard,” Harris said of Foothill senior Myles Carrillo, the captain who leads the Knights in scoring at 11.2 points per game. “They have smart players who look to shoot, and they run their sets relentlessly.

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Last year ended as a disappointment for the Edison High girls’ basketball team. But this year has the Chargers one game from a CIF title. Using an effective inside-out game, Edison outlasted Mira Costa, 45-37, in a CIF Southern Section Division II-AA semifinal game at Huntington Beach High on Saturday night. Edison (24-4) will play top-seeded Brea Olinda on Saturday at 8:15 p.m. in the championship game, at Mater Dei High. “It’s exciting,” Edison Coach Dan Wiley said.

Rivals Edison and Fountain Valley met Wednesday on the closing night of the first round of the Sunset League boys' basketball season, and it was the host Chargers who came away with a 75-56 victory. Five Chargers scored in double figures, led by junior guard Brae Ivey's 17 points. Junior guards AJ Garrity and Jake Haar scored 14 and 13 points, respectively, senior guard Nick Rubio had 12 points, and junior guard Derek Molina scored 10. The win kept Edison in second place in the Sunset standings at 4-1. The Chargers, the seventh-ranked team in CIF Southern Section Division 1A, improved to 17-4 overall.

SANTA ANA — The Ocean View High boys’ basketball team knew what to do on the big stage. The experienced Seahawks showed it Saturday at the 15th annual Nike Extravaganza. And while Ocean View can’t depend on both its senior stars dropping 30-plus points on a consistent basis, when it happens it’s fun for Seahawks fans to watch. Avery Johnson got the steal near midcourt, took off and slammed the ball at the buzzer. It was an exclamation point — and the buzzer only signified the end of the third quarter. But Johnson and his Ocean View High teammates had already shown they wouldn’t be denied. They made a powerful statement in winning the Seahawks’ first CIF boys’ basketball title since 1998, and second overall. SANTA ANA — Time was running out for the Edison High girls’ basketball team from the very beginning Saturday night at Mater Dei High. Brea Olinda and the Ladycats’ pressing defense made sure of it. By the time the Chargers got into the front-court, the shot clock was already a factor. Time turned out be on Brea Olinda’s side, and so was the 62-40 verdict in the CIF Southern Section Division II-AA championship game. Edison fought gamely but was denied in its attempt for its first CIF girls’ hoops title since 1987.
