U.S. Rep. Dana Rohrabacher’s office has sent out a notice that those in his district interested in the United States Service Academies are facing a Monday deadline to complete their applications. “This is a unique opportunity for ambitious young men and women to earn a college degree while serving honorably in our armed forces,” Rohrabacher said in a statement. The academies, which include the U.S. Air Force Academy, the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, the U.S. Naval Academy and U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, require nominations from officials such as members of Congress.

Junior Girl Scout Troop 628, based out of Circle View Elementary School in Huntington Beach, passed out piggy banks to local businesses to collect donations for "Pennies for Prevention," a program that supports drug-use prevention efforts in schools. The girls participated in the project while working toward earning the Girl Scouts' Bronze Award for community service ... Navy Midshipman Michael A. Mullee, who graduated from Edison High School in June, recently completed "Plebe Summer" at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. Mullee's orientation to the academy included training in seamanship, navigation and marksmanship.

Andrew Edwards After 12 years of homework, classes and fun, the members of Edison High School's class of 2004 are ready to go. Graduating Chargers capped off their high school careers with a high-energy ceremony at the school's center stage. The sun had burned through the June gloom just in time for commencement, and the crowd of graduates' families and friends cheered loudly as the seniors celebrated their accomplishments. "I'm very proud of my son, and I wouldn't want anybody else," said Cathy Edmun, whose son Robert plans to attend the police academy at Golden West College.
