Thursday marks the beginning of a three-week gauntlet to the nonleague portion of its schedule for the Edison High football team. For starters, the Servite Friars come calling on the Chargers in an intriguing 7 p.m. matchup at Orange Coast College. It's the first game in two weeks for the Chargers who were idle a week ago. Servite, meanwhile, has been anything but idle the past two weeks. Since falling in its opener to Las Vegas Bishop Gorman, the Friars have scored impressive victories over CIF Southern Section ranked opponents, Long Beach Poly and La Mirada.

Quarterback Alek Torgersen of Edison High threw a 35-yard touchdown late in the first half of Friday's Orange County North-South All-Star Football Game at Orange Coast College and it proved to be enough for the South, which took a 7-3 victory. Torgersen, who will attend the University of Pennsylvania, was seven of 15 for 90 yards. He also rushed 12 times for 49 yards and was selected the Offensive Player of the Game. Torgersen's scoring pass went to wide receiver Scott Hoover of San Juan Hills and it put the South in front to stay with 4:46 left before halftime.

Playing against its biggest rival, the Golden West College women?s volleyball team stepped up to the challenge. Yet, a five-game loss two days later showed the Rustlers that the consistency they?ll need at the end of the season may not quite be there yet. Golden West upset Orange Coast in four games, 22-25, 25-23, 25-21, 29-27, on Oct. 7. The Pirates came into the match unbeaten and ranked No. 3 in the state, but the No. 11-ranked Rustlers came to play, even after losing the first game.

The program, offered at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, has provided students with the technical skills necessary to garner positions as certified mechanics in the aviation industry since 1969.
