Hoag Health Center Huntington Beach, one of seven health centers overseen by Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian, celebrated its 20th anniversary with an outdoor reception May 25. The center at 19582 Beach Blvd., which broke ground in May 1990, maintains a staff of 45 physicians in 16 specialties, including family practice, ophthalmology, orthopedic surgery and internal medicine. "We have always been a part of this community, and we're grateful to the city of Huntington Beach for being our partner for the past 20 years," said Richard Afable, the president and chief executive of Hoag Hospital, in a release.

A Canadian man wanted on suspicion of a 1984 Huntington Beach murder appears to have committed suicide after a judge upheld his extradition to Orange County, officials said Friday. Gerald Su Go, 53, formerly of Torrance, has been locked in an extradition battle while in Canada since 2007, according to the Orange County district attorney?s office. Go was pronounced dead May 13. His death is still under investigation by Canadian officials, but appears to be suicide, officials said.

One of the unfortunate byproducts of the corporate age, at least around Orange County, is the phasing out of genuine weirdness. As chain supermarkets, hotels, bookstores and other corporate entities pack the streets, the remaining bits of color around town — Old Towne Orange, say, or the Artists Village in Santa Ana — seem more precious than ever. There are advantages to living in one of the cleanest, most efficient parts of the country. But for about two vacation weeks a year, I try to break away and experience life on the other side.

A Fountain Valley hospital employee has been sentenced to three years in prison for embezzling more than $300,000 over five years. Bridget Dominique Ganier, 38, of Las Vegas, was sentenced Tuesday after pleading guilty to stealing money from Orange Coast Memorial Medical Center’s cafeteria registers, according to a release from the Orange County district attorney’s office. Ganier was also ordered to pay more than $306,000 in restitution. Ganier worked as the cafeteria’s executive assistant from September 2003 to June 2008 and supervised the daily revenues and deposits.

A 30-minute commute may not seem like a long time, but for Albert and Elly Armas it was too long. Every second could have been the last for their son, Jaysen. The new parents stressed and worried about their boy’s health. They wanted to stay closer to the hospital. The Armases said they were lucky to find the Ronald McDonald House in Orange. The house, two minutes from the Children’s Hospital of Orange County, allows families to be close to their hospitalized children.
