The Marina High boys' water polo team concluded its summer season by earning a fourth-place finish in the 18-and-under Division of the 35th annual Hawaiian Invitational Water Polo Tournament. The six-day tournament was played at Punahou High and the University of Hawaii in Honolulu. The Vikings began the tournament by winning their bracket. They went on to finish first in qualifying round play but lost a one-goal decision to Stanford Club. The tournament's top teams advanced to the final four, where Marina finished fourth.

HUNTINGTON BEACH — The members of the Golden West College men’s water polo team came, they saw and they conquered. Then, they hung around and cheered as their female counterparts did the same thing. It was a special day Saturday for Rustlers aquatics, as the men and women both captured titles at the California Community College Athletic Assn. State Championships at Golden West. Both Rustlers squads took down Long Beach City College for the title. The men won, 7-5, while the women took a 6-5 decision.

The Huntington Beach Water Polo Club's 16-and-under girls' team finished 21st at the 2004 Junior Olympics water polo tournament at Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The team, coached by Stalin Reyes, was making its first venture to the Junior Olympics. In the match for 21st-place, Huntington edged Ventura 5-4. In its first bracket game, the team defeated Houston 5-2 and advanced to face a tough Golden Bear A team, which defeated Huntington 7-3. Huntington next lost to TRAP, which went on to place fourth in the tournament, 15-1.

Simpson inches closer to ASP tour Huntington Beach native Brett Simpson finished third over the Oct. 10-11 weekend at the RioSurf Pro International tournament in Brazil, helping him get closer to qualifying for the 2010 Assn. of Surfing Professionals World Tour. Simpson is now sixth in the ASP World Qualifying Series rankings. With four more six-star PRIME tournaments left, he needs to stay in the top 15 by the end of the year to qualify. Trella to compete at Top 40 this weekend The 2009 Speedo Top 40 women’s water polo festival starts Friday at the USA Water Polo National Training Center in Los Alamitos and features several players with Huntington Beach ties.

Four age group teams from the Huntington Beach Water Polo Club "Piranhas" have qualified for the 2007 Summer U.S. Water Polo National Junior Olympics. The national tournament begins Saturday and concludes Wednesday in San Jose. The qualifying Piranhas teams include the boys' 12- and 14-and-under teams and the girls' 14-U and high school-age teams. Last year, the boys' 12-U team finished fifth. "As part of the community, the Huntington Beach Water Polo Club is proud to represent the city of Huntington Beach in this prestigious event, Alex Alvarez, director of the club, said in a statement.

Registration continues for club Golden West Water Polo Club began its fall season Tuesday and is still accepting registration for its 16- and 18-and-under teams. The season will run through Nov. 11 and the fee is $300 per player. The club's 18-and-under team won the 2004 Junior Olympic championship in August. Training sites are Golden West College and UC Irvine. Training schedule times and days are as follows: Tuesdays, 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.; Thursdays, 7 to 9 p.m.; Sundays, 3 to 6 p.m., all at the Golden West College pool.

Mike Sciacca Call them road warriors. They are the student athletes in the boys' and girls' water polo and swim programs at Huntington Beach High. What else would you deem a group that has traveled from place to place, looking, searching, for a venue in which to play? They have continually hit the road, all for the love of a sport. But all that is about to change. Since 1991, the school's aquatics programs have been without a pool on campus.

Andrew Wainer Although former Huntington Beach water polo prodigy David Breihan helped lead his Cal Poly San Luis Obispo team to a national championship in Arizona this month, they literally gave their shirts -- and a lot of other clothing -- to get there. Because the club team receives no funding from the university, the team shot a fund-raising calendar featuring all of the players totally nude -- save for a well-placed water-polo ball gingerly suspended in mid-air.

Perennial water polo power Marina High had three members of its program selected to the 1999 National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association's All-American teams, the NISCA announced Thursday. Two players from the Vikings boys' team, and one from the Marina girl's squad, were named All-American. Five boys teams were selected, and the coaches association formed four girls teams. Jeff Larson, the leading scorer for Marina this past season, was named First-Team.

IRVINE - The CIF Southern Section Division 7 girls' water polo championship game matched the top two teams from the Golden West League and like the previous two meetings this season between Segerstrom and Ocean View, Saturday's final favored Segerstrom. Second-seeded Ocean View stayed with the Golden West League champions late into the third quarter but the top-seeded Jaguars were able to pull away to record a 7-4 victory that gave the program its first Southern Section title in the sport.

It was a stellar weekend for Vanguard Aquatics competing in the Kap7 International Water Polo Tournament played at several locations in south Orange County. The 10U coed Silver team earned the third-place finish in the 10U Division. The team is composed of mostly female players, one of the few teams at the 10U level that has such a program. Ellen Hayami , former standout player at Huntington Beach High and Golden West College, coaches the team. The 10U Blue team captured third place in the 12U Gold Division.

The wild-card way is how the Edison High girls' water polo team has begun its postseason drive. The Chargers opened CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoff action by playing a wild-card game Tuesday, and their thorough performance Tuesday at the Costa Mesa High pool has them moving on in the postseason. Edison cruised to a 12-2 victory over El Dorado. The ninth-ranked Chargers shut out the Golden Hawks (Century League No. 4) in the first quarter and the entirety of the second half.

The Edison High girls' water polo team prepped for the start of the Sunset League race by competing last weekend at the Holiday Cup. The Chargers, who rose to No. 7 in this week's CIF Southern Section Division 1 poll, split four games at one of the premiere girls' water polo events in the Southland. Edison began the tournament Friday and lost, 9-8, to Riverside Poly, but bounced back to edge Carlsbad, 8-7. Sabrina Jensen scored four goals, Delaney Cleveland three goals, and Josette Santos had nine saves in the loss to Riverside Poly, the top-ranked team in CIF Southern Section Division 5. Jensen again led the scoring with four goals, and Cleveland scored twice, in the win against a Carlsbad team that is ranked No. 1 in CIF San Diego Section Division 1. The Edison High girls' water polo team won some key matches to reach the semifinal round of the Villa Park Tournament, and the Chargers ended up with a fourth-place finish at the conclusion of the three-day event Saturday. Edison (5-6), ranked No. 8 in CIF Southern Section Division 1, started the tournament Dec. 12 and routed Bonita, 22-6. Sabrina Jensen scored six goals and Laurin Semmelroth had four goals in the win. In their second game, the Chargers used a game-winning goal in overtime by Delaney Cleveland, her fifth score of the match, to knock off fifth-ranked San Marcos, 12-11.

The Golden West College women's water polo team added another award to the school's trophy case Saturday by edging host Riverside City College, 12-11, in the California Community College Women's Water Polo State Championships title game at Riverside Aquatic Complex. Orange Empire Conference and Southern California regional champion Golden West repeated as state champion and put the final touch on a perfect season. The Rustlers finished 29-0, and defeated Riverside in all five meetings this year between the teams.

The Ocean View High boys' water polo team reached the semifinal round of the CIF Southern Section Division 7 boys' water polo playoffs by winning its first three postseason games in the past week. The Seahawks, the No. 2 team from the Golden West League and No. 5 seed in the tournament, advanced to Wednesday's semifinal round by defeating host Brentwood (Freelance), 13-8, in a quarterfinal match Saturday. Ocean View (21-10) met No. 2-seeded Yorba Linda (Empire League No. 1) in one of two division semifinal matches Wednesday.

The chase for the Sunset League boys' water polo championship launched Oct. 9 and in a key game to start the league season, Huntington Beach scored a 10-6 victory over Edison at Newport Harbor High. Not only did the victory allowed the Oilers to start league play 1-0, it also presented Coach Brian Anderson with his 100th career win with the Huntington program. Edison took a 3-1 lead in the match but Huntington (14-5 overall) scored six unanswered goals to pull out to a 7-3 advantage in the second half.

Unable to find the net in the opening half of a nonleague game Tuesday against Montebello, the Huntington Beach High boys' water polo team came up with a strong second half to earn a 6-4 home win. Huntington, the No. 9 ranked team in CIF Southern Section Division 1, trailed Montebello, the No. 7 team in Division 3, 4-2 at the half. A 4-0 second half by the HB Oilers followed. Center/forward Matt Cook scored twice. Freshman Patrick Saunders and sophomore Nolan Strout, splitting time in goal, recorded nine and eight saves, respectively.

A balanced scoring attack enabled the Huntington Beach High boys' water polo team to come back from a three-goal deficit Tuesday against Servite, and defeat the visiting Friars, 13-6, in nonleague play. Servite opened up a 3-0 lead before the Oilers stormed back. Jack Shearer, Ryan Sillasen and Quinten Osborne each scored twice, Matt Cook drew three exclusions, and goalie Alex Wolf had 13 saves. The Oilers led, 5-4, at the half and then outscored the Friars, 8-2, in the second half.
