HUNTINGTON BEACH — Quin Gorbould was down to his last strike at the District 62 Tournament of Champions. Facing an 0-2 count in the bottom of the seventh, Gorbould and his Ocean View Little League Major Red Sox teammates seemed to be running out of time. Gorbould didn’t panic. He took a borderline pitch, then barely made contact on a foul squibber down the first-base line. Then, he delivered, roping a single to tie the score at the Red Sox’s home field.

The city of Huntington Beach will not install red-light cameras at its intersections, following a review of a study conducted this spring. The potential use of the cameras attracted public outcry over what opponents say is simply a source of revenue, rather than an interest in public safety. After receiving approval from the City Council in early March, Redflex Traffic Systems installed cameras for 12-hour runs during the study period at 18 of the city’s intersections.

It’s one of the cruelest insults a boy can get from his peers, one that can question his masculinity and his baseball talent all at the same time. “You throw like a girl!” This barb, however, is not heard in the Ocean View Little League Minor A division. Heck, it’s a compliment in these parts. Many of the boys in the division can only dream of throwing as well as Emma Ziegler. Yep, she’s a girl; the long, blond hair kind of gives it away.

Before Huntington Beach spends thousands of dollars to install and then maintain red-light cameras, has anyone thought of delaying the red lights (?City readies red-light cameras,? March 5)? What do I mean? When a light turns red, delay the other side from turning green by a few moments. This would allow an intersection to be at a total standstill. If a car should run the red light, it would decrease the possibility of an accident and also allow the ?safe? passage of a police car to follow that car. From what I read in the article, safety is the issue ?

Drivers may be a little more cautious in the future, as the city has approved the installation of up to 20 red-light cameras at its most accident-prone intersections. The City Council moved 5-2 to sign an agreement with Redflex Traffic Systems Inc. to study up to 20 of the city’s highest priority intersections to determine if they’re viable candidates for red-light cameras. Within four to six weeks, the City Council will review the results of the survey and approve the locations that will receive cameras.

Members of mega-church Harvest Christian Fellowship are surrounded by reminders of Pastor Greg Laurie’s son, Christopher Laurie: the bumper stickers he designed for the annual Harvest Crusade; the church website he built; even large parts of “Lost Boy,” a documentary on the life of Greg Laurie, a Newport Beach resident. Laurie, 33, a graphic artist and Huntington Beach resident who spent the last three years as the church’s art director, died Thursday morning in a car accident in Corona, according to authorities.
