HUNTINGTON BEACH — Hitting home runs was common stuff this year for Kai Ross of the Robinwood Little League Major division Phillies. At 5-foot-9, he towers over opponents and teammates alike. Comparing Ross to a counterpart on the major league Phillies, he’s Ryan Howard, just maybe not so husky. Both players have the ability to hit no-doubt home runs. And both have helped lead their team to a title. Ross’ two-run shot Saturday helped lead the Phillies to a Little League District 62 Tournament of Champions title, 3-1 over the Ocean View Little League Red Sox at the Ocean View fields.

Robinwood Little League's bid to contend for the 2000 District 62 All-Star Tournament Majors Division title was ended by Westminster Saturday, which scored an 8-3 victory in Area 2 competition at Robinwood. Hits by Scott Schauer, Gray Bailey, and Stephen Powers gave Robinwood a 2-0 first inning lead, but it didn't hold, as Westminster grabbed a 4-2 advantage on two throwing errors and two passed balls. Robinwood narrowed the gap to 4-3 on Schauer's RBI sacrifice fly to deep center field, but a home run by Bryce Cutspec highlighted a four run fifth inning for Westminster, which extended its lead to 8-3. Robinwood didn't quite, however, as it loaded the bases with two out. Corey Kotler then hit a chopper up the middle and appeared to beat out the throw at first base, but the base umpire ruled Kotler out, ending the game.

Mike Sciacca, Independent One day after dropping a tough decision to Westminster, the Robinwood Little League Majors Division All-Star team kept its District 62 title hopes alive Thursday by eliminating Fountain Valley, 7-3, at Robinwood. Robinwood can attribute this victory to its offense, whose bats finally came alive after consecutive scoring just three runs in two previous tournament games. "Yes, we finally are hitting the baseball," Robinwood Manager Randy Schauer said.
