For the first time in 12 years, the Edison High girls' soccer program is returning to a CIF Southern Section championship final. The Chargers earned their first trip to a title game Tuesday by taking down another higher ranked opponent in postseason play. This time, third-seeded Foothill fell victim to the Chargers who took a 1-0 home field victory in a Division 1 semifinal. The triumph puts 10th-ranked Edison in the Saturday's division final. Edison High girls' soccer coach Kerry Crooks knew the challenge her team would go up against in Saturday's CIF Southern Section Division 1 championship game. Not only did her Chargers have to face a talented Santa Margarita team, but had to do so without their top scorer. Edison's bid to win the program's third Southern Section title, and first since 2002, fell short at Corona High. The 10th-ranked Chargers fell, 3-0, to the fifth-ranked Eagles. Despite the loss, Edison joined Santa Margarita in the CIF Southern California Regional Girls' Soccer Championships.

The Edison High football team couldn't have capped summer play any better way. On Saturday at Edison, the Chargers won the Bash at the Beach 7-on-7 passing tournament by defeating Mater Dei, 29-20, in the final. In the championship game, quarterback Alek Torgersen led the Chargers to four scores and also threw a two-point conversion pass. The Chargers won the tournament for the fifth time in its 14-year history, and first since 2009. This year's event again drew 16 teams, several of which are considered among the top squads in the Southland.

Huntington Beach Pop Warner expands Huntington Beach Pop Warner football opened its second campus program this year. For the first time, Marina High in north Huntington Beach is hosting Pop Warner football. This year, the youth football organization fielded three Pop Warner Vikings teams in the flag, junior pee wee and midget divisions. Marina High football coach Dan Petrone was instrumental in the start-up of the new program and continues to be a great partner and supporter of Huntington Beach Pop Warner.

Costa Mesa assistant city manager Steve Hayman is on his way to a new city. Rancho Santa Margarita's City Council approved a contract Friday making Hayman its city manager, said Neil Blais, a Santa Margarita councilman. Blais said Saturday that Hayman emerged as his city's choice after a series of interviews with eight candidates who were selected from an initial pool of more than 75 applicants. Hayman could not be reached for comment Saturday.

The 2007 Ocean View Girls? Varsity Basketball Tournament begins Monday with pool play action. Twelve teams ? Mayfair of Lakewood and Leuzinger of Lawndale are the only out-of-county teams in the tournament ? will compete in the six-day event which plays throughout next week, culminating in the championship game Dec. 22. The title game will be played at 2:30 p.m. Dec. 22 and is preceded by the third-place game at 1 p.m., fifth-place game at 11:20 a.m. and the seventh-place game at 10 a.m. The Teams Pool A: Capistrano Valley, Santa Margarita, University Pool B: Mayfair, Ocean View , Tesoro Pool C: Dana Hills, Mater Dei, Pacifica Pool D: Fountain Valley, Leuzinger, Northwood ?

Steve Hernandez scored four touchdowns as the Huntington Beach Pop Warner Pee Wee Green Chargers topped Saddleback Valley, 24-6, in their season opener Saturday at Edison High. Hernandez scored on rushing touchdowns of 40, 32 and 30 yards. He also returned an interception 60 yards for another score for the Green Chargers. Raymond Tafoya added another ground score for the Green Chargers, who play host to Yorba Linda Saturday at noon in their second game.  In a Midget Division season opener, the Huntington Beach Blue Vikings fell to the Pasadena Trojans, 22-6, at Marina High.

The Chargers are one of 12 teams in the single-day event Saturday. The teams will be split into four pools. Pool A: Chaminade, Dana Hills, Oaks Christian, Tesoro; Pool B: Alemany, Mater Dei, Mission Viejo, Upland; Pool C: Capistrano Valley, Long Beach Poly, Narbonne, San Clemente: Pool D: Edison, El Toro, Loyola, Santa Margarita. Edison opens pool play at 9 a.m. against El Toro, then has games against Santa Margarita (10:30 a.m.)

Several of the CIF Southern Section?s top prep football teams, including programs that won Southern Section titles in 2007, will gather Saturday at Edison High to take part in the Battle of the Beach Passing Tournament, hosted by the Chargers football program. The all-day event begins with pool play at 9 a.m. and continues with games at 10 and 11. Play will continue in the afternoon, leading up to the championship game at 3 p.m. Joining host Edison in the event is Mater Dei, Los Alamitos, Santa Margarita, La Habra, Trabuco Hills, Foothill, Tesoro, Orange Lutheran, JSerra, Carlsbad, Centennial of Corona, South Hills, Valencia of Valencia, Chaparral and Murietta Valley.

Three members of the Huntington Beach High boys' soccer team were named this week to the Southern California Soccer Coaches' Assn. 2005-06 Boys' Soccer Team. Kyle McAthy, Gray Bailey and Dirk Petersen each was named to the Division I team. Sixteen players were named to each of the first, second and third teams. McAthy, a junior forward, was named first team. He was one of just three players from the Sunset League named to the squad, joining senior forward Kyle Campbell and senior midfielder Kyle Parton, both of Los Alamitos.

After two matches, Huntington Beach High and Los Alamitos have taken the early lead in the Sunset League girls' volleyball title race. The Oilers on Tuesday went to 2-0 in league by sweeping host Fountain Valley, 25-9, 25-23, 25-3. Senior setter/opposite Kendra Koelsch had three kills and seven blocks, junior defensive specialist Julia Hennekam seven aces, and senior outside hitter Katie Lespier six kills and eight digs for the Oilers. The win put Huntington at 18-4 overall. Fountain Valley slipped to 0-2 in league.

A balanced scoring attack enabled the Huntington Beach High boys' water polo team to come back from a three-goal deficit Tuesday against Servite, and defeat the visiting Friars, 13-6, in nonleague play. Servite opened up a 3-0 lead before the Oilers stormed back. Jack Shearer, Ryan Sillasen and Quinten Osborne each scored twice, Matt Cook drew three exclusions, and goalie Alex Wolf had 13 saves. The Oilers led, 5-4, at the half and then outscored the Friars, 8-2, in the second half.

Twelve teams will put their passing game to the test Saturday when they battle it out at the Huntington Beach Passing Tournament at Huntington Beach High. The tourney includes eight teams from Orange County, two from L.A. County and two from Riverside County. Each team will play two pool play games in the morning before each moves on to afternoon action. Each team will receive a seed for the afternoon session based on the outcome of morning session games. The six seeded games will be played at noon.

The Huntington Beach Jr. Midget Division Green Chargers will play for a Orange Empire Conference championship on Sunday. Huntington advanced to the division's Orange Bowl game by defeating the Saddleback Valley Wolverines, 24-14, in a semifinal game Saturday. The 10-1 Chargers will meet the 10-0 Santa Margarita Black Titans at 5 p.m. Sunday at Aliso Niguel High in Aliso Viejo. Huntington struck first against Saddleback Valley. Behind the running of Shaun Colamonico and Daniel Serrano, the Green Chargers moved swiftly downfield.

Fountain Valley wrapped up a successful first week to the 2012 softball season by winning the Cypress Tournament. The Barons took the tournament title Saturday by shutting out La Mirada, 2-0. The Matadores took runner-up honors in CIF Southern Section Division II last year. Emily Brucelas had a hit and run batted in, Cerissa Rivera and Kelli Tatum both had a hit and scored a run and Madi Perez and Mercedes Brito also had a hit. Rivera improved to 4-0 after striking out eight.
