Mike McGill Great news for those hoping to keep our military bases open: Los Alamitos and Seal Beach both escaped the Defense Department's base realignment and closure list and will remain open for at least a few more years. Although the Department of Defense has not included these bases on the list and Congress could now add them to the list over the next few weeks, this event seems highly unlikely, as it has not been done before. What was the threat?

Police investigating vehicular assault A traffic collision that occurred during a "road rage" report is being investigated by police as an assault with a deadly weapon. At about 9:11 p.m. Saturday, a 24-year-old Sunset Beach woman reported that her car was intentionally rammed from behind by the driver of a gray, older model Acura Legend. Police would not release the name of the victim to protect her safety. Sgt. Dave Bunetta said the woman was driving north on Pacific Coast Highway toward Seal Beach at the time of the crash.

A Long Beach fire captain and Huntington Beach resident charged with injuring a cyclist while driving drunk pleaded not guilty Tuesday at Orange County Superior Court, according to a district attorney spokeswoman. John David Hines, 38, turned himself in Tuesday morning, according to prosecutors. An arrest warrant worth $250,000 had been issued for him. His pretrial hearing is scheduled for June 17 at the Central Justice Center in Santa Ana. Hines allegedly became intoxicated on the morning of April 1, then drove erratically on Westminster Avenue in Seal Beach in his Chevrolet pickup truck with an alcohol level of .24, three times the legal limit.

Huntington Beach's Heidi Tschanner rode to a second-place finish Sunday at the Wahine Women's Surf Series event in Huntington Beach. Tschanner maneuvered her way through 4- to 6-foot swells under good conditions to place second behind winner Alison Cutler of Ventura, who also won the Ladies Shortboard event. Other winners Sunday included Rachel Bellows (Seal Beach) in Girls' Longboard (12 & Under); Jenny Quam (San Juan Capistrano) in Junior Women; Mariah Wilson (Lakewood)
