Registration is now open for the South Huntington Beach Girls Softball 2014 spring season and will continue through Dec. 31. All girls between the ages of five and 14 are eligible to sign up through online registration at http://www.shbgfs.org. The league also will hold walk-in registration sessions from noon to 3 p.m. both Sunday and Dec. 8, and from 5 to 8 p.m. Dec. 18. Each session will take place at Lamppost Pizza (10084 Adams Ave., Huntington Beach). The 2014 season runs from late-January into the second week in May. The SHBGS playing fields are located across the street from Edison High.

Down to potentially the last out of the game, and its season Tuesday, the Edison softball team showed its character by putting together a final rally that created some anxious moments for Santiago of Corona in the semifinal round of the CIF Southern Section Division 1 softball playoffs. Trailing by five runs, the sixth-ranked Chargers used back-to-back home runs to pull within two, but had their spirited comeback fall short on an outstanding catch in center field that ended the game.

LOSĀ ALAMITOSĀ - The first Sunset League title in 26 years came suddenly, as Edison High sophomore pitcher Allyson Hecht struck out the final Los Alamitos batter. The moment Coach Kendra Rosales had building the team up to had arrived. The Chargers are co-champions of one of the toughest leagues in Southern California, after edging the Griffins, 2-1, on the road Thursday. Edison (19-5, 8-2) shares its first league title since 1983 with Marina (22-5, 8-2). However, the Chargers have won the coin flip and will take the league’s No. 1 designation into the CIF Southern Section Division I playoffs.

In the final prep honors bestowed by the CIF-Southern Section during the 2005-06 school year, five Surf City athletes have been named All-CIF-SS in baseball and softball. The Southern Section office in Los Alamitos made the announcement Tuesday and Wednesday. Three of the five locals were named to the 2006 All Southern Section Baseball Coaches Assn. Baseball teams, including Hank Conger of Huntington Beach. Conger, a first-round pick by the Angels in the June 6 amateur baseball draft, was named first-team in Division I. Geoff Klein of Ocean View was a first-team pick in Division III, and Seahawks' teammate James Kang was a second-team selection.

The Huntington Beach Breeze 12-and-under softball team will be in the 2008 Triple Crown National Championship beginning Monday in Park City, Utah. The team, which leaves Sunday for Park City, qualified in late January by winning a tournament and have prepared all season for this week-long national event. The tournament runs through July 13. The Breeze will compete in Pool D. They play their tournament opener at 8 a.m. Tuesday against Colorado and then come back at 11:30 a.m. to face Voodoo, another team from California.

The South Huntington Beach 12-and-Under All-Star team went undefeated in five games this past weekend to win the Thunder-at-the-Plate Softball Tournament in Paramount. An outstanding offensive effort by South Huntington Beach resulted in 61 hits in the five games, which was backed by solid pitching performances and strong defense. That all-around effort resulted in victories over host Paramount (5-3), Rosemead (11-4) and Torrance (11-4) in pool play.

The South Huntington Beach 8-and-under Silver All-Star team claimed its first postseason title May 17 at the 10th annual Oceanside Riptide softball tournament in Vista. Two days of fierce competition saw South Huntington Beach defeat North Shore (8-4), Rancho Trabuco (4-3) and Oceanside (16-5) in pool play. Those three victories earned the team a No. 1 seed going into bracket play. They opened Sunday with a second win over North Shore, this time by a 13-2 score. In the championship game, the girls played their hearts out in the heat and finished strong to take the victory with a 15-8 win over Rancho Trabuco.

For the first time in league history, the North Huntington Beach 12-and-under girls' softball All-Star team has qualified for the national tournament. Surf 'N Softball earned a berth in the upcoming event by winning three games at the State tournament held in Lancaster. They defeated Vista, 2-1, blanked Hart, 4-0 and routed Lake Elsinore, 9-2, to qualify for the national tournament that will run July 28 through Aug. 3 in Roseville, Calif. Surf 'N Sport previously won the District tournament to qualify for the State tournament.

Ocean View High graduate Brooke Hitchcock could hit on the volleyball court or the softball diamond, and she could kick on the soccer field. Hitchcock, who was team captain and first-team All-Golden West League in all three sports, was recently named the Golden West League Female Athlete of the Year. ?I was super-excited,? she said about finding out she had won the honor. ?Sports has always been a big part of my life.? Hitchcock helped Ocean View finish second in league in girls?

The road to the Sunset League softball championship is never an easy one to navigate and for the Huntington Beach Oilers, consecutive road trips to the diamonds of title contenders last week could have been potential roadblocks. The Oilers, however, passed both tests. Huntington zoomed into first place in the league standings by winning both games, most recently, taking a 5-2 victory at Edison April 24. The win came on the heels of a 1-0 shutout win April 22 at defending champ Marina.

As openers go, Marina High's softball team couldn't have asked for a better debut. Behind a potent offense and a first-game pitching gem, the Vikings were all over Kennedy, winning, 25-1, in nonleague play March 6 over the host Fighting Irish. Several Vikings powered the offense led by senior Tera Blanco, who hit a grand slam and drove in six runs. Blanco also registered her initial pitching win in her first game, getting the win on a one-hitter. Junior Emili Olague also homered in a three for three performance that included five RBIs.

Alexandra Perkins turned in a record-setting career at Santa Ana College and now the Edison High grad has singed a National Letter of Intent to continue her academic and softball career at Tennessee. A two-year starter for the Dons, Perkins established program career records for stolen bases (63) and runs scored (89). She also broke the school's single-season record for stolen bases with 42 and in the process, set a new program mark for consecutive stolen bases (42) without being thrown out. Tennessee was the runner-up to the 2013 NCAA softball national championship.

The second round of the CIF Southern Section softball playoffs proved to be the undoing for three local teams. On Tuesday, Marina and Edison were eliminated from title contention in Division 1, and Ocean View the same in Division 4. Sunset League champion Marina held the lead at Etiwanda late but the host Eagles rallied in the bottom of the seventh inning to pull out a 6-5 victory to move on to Thursday's quarterfinals. Sophomore Emili Olague went two for three with a double and two runs batted in , and senior Bella Secaira had a single and RBI for Marina.

The final week of the Sunset League baseball race sure made things interesting. Prior to the closing day of league play on May 9, Fountain Valley High already had won the Sunset League baseball championship. The Barons finished league play with a 12-3 record, one game ahead of fast-charging Marina which took second place with an 11-4 record. In a battle for CIF playoff consideration, Huntington Beach defeated Edison to finish fourth in league. The Barons had a three-game lead in the Sunset standings going into the final week.

Ocean View High and Huntington Beach got a jump start on Marina and Edison in the CIF Southern Section softball playoffs by playing division wild-card games Tuesday. The Seahawks extended their season, but the Oilers saw theirs come to an end. Fifth-ranked Ocean View advanced in the Division 4 tournament by rolling past visiting Beverly Hills, 15-0. The Seahawks, the third-place team from the Golden West League, received a two-hit, eight-strikeout performance from senior Brittany Hitchcock who garnered her 18th win of the season.

Marina, Edison, Huntington Beach and Ocean View softball teams learned of their respective opponents in the CIF Southern Section playoffs, as pairings were released Monday. In Division 1, Marina (24-3), the Sunset League champion, plays host to Tuesday's wild-card winner in Thursday's first round. The Vikings await the winner between Corona (17-14, Big VIII League at-large) at Moreno Valley Rancho Verde (14-9, Inland Valley League No. 3) Edison (20-10), the Sunset League second-place team, plays at Moreno Valley Valley View (13-14, Inland Valley League No. 2)

Marina clinched a tie for the 2013 Sunset League softball championship Tuesday when the Vikings rolled to a 12-0 victory at Newport Harbor. Emili Olague went three for three with a home run and junior pitcher Tera Blanco earned the win to improve to 23-3. "I am very pleased with the team's performance," Marina Coach Shelly Luth said. "They came out on fire and really took charge and played all six innings with intensity. Marina, ranked No. 2 in CIF Southern Section Division 1, can earn the Sunset title outright with a victory Thursday over Fountain Valley.
