A successful 2006 Little League season came to an end for the Ocean View 10/11-year-old All-Star team after it was eliminated from Section 5 Tournament play. Needing a victory in an elimination game against Laguna Niguel — the winner would advance to face Tustin in the division's championship game — Ocean View dropped a 7-2 decision on July 25. It was the second loss in the double-elimination tournament for District 62 representative Ocean View, and both losses came at the hands of District 55's Laguna Niguel.

Jose Paul Corona A Santa Ana jury sentenced 28-year-old Jason Abhyankar, a former Huntington Beach teacher, to 24 years in prison for child molestation. Abhyankar, a former Surf City resident and elementary school teacher, was sentenced last week after being convicted in March of three counts of child molestation. He was convicted of molesting three male students while he was a teacher in Huntington Beach and Trabuco Canyon, said Susan Schroeder, deputy district attorney and spokeswoman for the Orange County District Attorney's Office.

The third annual Hoops of Hope Shoot-a-thon is May 30 at the Huntington Beach High gymnasium. The free-throw shooting event includes live music, food and a silent auction and raffle and runs from 3 to 7 p.m. All proceeds will help support the construction of a medical center in Zambia and provide backpacks to needy children in the U.S. Admission cost is a $5 donation at the door. Raffle tickets can be purchased for $1 each. Hoops of Hope is the largest free throw shoot-a-thon in the world.

The Robinwood Majors All-Stars coaching staff knew that it had the pitching and defense to make a serious challenge toward the 2006 District All-Star Tournament championship. What they got as an unexpected bonus was a very productive offense. Robinwood concluded a dominating run through the district tournament on July 12 by defeating host Seaview, 6-1, to sweep the best-of-three championship series. A night earlier, Robinwood won the first series game, 7-0. The tournament was played at LeBard Park, home of Seaview Little League.
