Ocean View High senior Conor Clifford took the next step in his academic and athletic career when the 7-foot center signed to play for the UC Irvine men's basketball team Monday (). Clifford averaged 14.9 points, 9.4 rebounds, 2.3 blocks and shot 68% from the field in a 2011-12 season that ended with him sharing the Golden West League Most Valuable Player honor with teammate Cristian Rivera. Ocean View athletic director and boys' basketball co-Coach Tim Walsh said that several schools recruited Clifford, who also had offers from UC Davis, UC Riverside and Northern Arizona.

There's nothing like the allure of college basketball's March Madness -- with the brackets, the office pools and the constant hoops action. But it's October. What's a fan to do? Across the country, basketball nuts have traditionally packed collegiate arenas for late-night events that celebrate the start of practice. Blake Sasaki, assistant athletic director for marketing and promotions at UC Irvine, watched the spirited events as a young basketball fan. Now he is trying to replicate the excitement on his campus.

With the regulars taking the week off from competition, the UC Irvine men's cross country 'B' team finished seventh in the UC San Diego Triton Classic Saturday. UCI totaled 175 points led by John Peate, who finished 34th in 27 minutes, 8.8 seconds over the 8,000-meter course. Bryan Lopez was 37th (27:21.0), Pete Smith finished 40th (27:30.3), Greg Thompson was 42nd (27:34.8) and Dan Driscoll placed 63rd in 28:00.5. The UCI women's 'B' team finished eighth with 194 points.

The UC Irvine women's cross country team finished second among 17 teams and the men's squad was fourth in a 12-school field in the UCI invitational at Central Park in Huntington Beach Saturday. Chico State won the women's team title with 48 points, followed by UCI with 78 and Long Beach State with 95. Katie Lee of Chico State won the 5,000-meter race in 17 minutes, 59.1 seconds. UCI redshirt freshman Laura Olvera was third in 18:38.7 and senior Amber Steen, a former Newport Harbor High standout and transfer from Arizona, placed 13th in 18:54.

Researchers at UC Irvine want to make technology greener by using a $1.5-million grant to produce a prototype electronic device using environmentally friendly materials. Scientists have five years to use the grant. Professor Oladele Ogunseitan, slated to lead the research team, said it is hoped that the result of the research will be a device -- possibly a cell phone -- that works as well as current technology but uses safer components. Cell phones and other electronics, Ogunseitan said, contain metals such as lead, mercury and cadmium.

Mesmerized by her glittering tiara, sash and diamond and gold necklace - perks of being Miss Fountain Valley - they stop her to ask, "Are you a real-life princess?" A gathering at Mile Square Park put Licata face-to-face with one such fan, who struggled to muster the courage to introduce herself. Initiating a conversation, Licata spent time with the child, learning later from her grateful mother that she had only recently emerged from a long hospital stint.

UC Irvine senior Nate White scored two goals to lead the No. 7-ranked Anteaters past No. 9 Loyola Marymount, 5-4, in the third-place game of the Triton men's water polo invitational in La Jolla Sunday. Dreason Barry, Andrew Dunn and Tim Hutten added a goal each for UCI, which improved to 3-1. In a championship semifinal game Sunday morning, UC San Diego's Chris Eichholz scored with 13 seconds left in overtime to give the eighth-ranked Tritons an 8-7 win over the Anteaters.

Bret Bonanni of Huntington Beach, a freshman student/athlete at Stanford University, was named to the USA Water Polo Men's Senior National Team. The team started play Wednesday at the UANA World Aquatic Championships Qualification Tournament at Calgary, Canada. A two-time All-CIF Southern Section Division 1 Player of the Year (2010-11) at Mater Dei High, Bonanni, an attacker, was one of 13 athletes named to the roster for the qualification tournament. The team features four Olympic athletes who competed at the 2012 London Games.

Timmy Lopes, who graduated from Edison High last week, has signed with the Seattle Mariners. Lopes was taken in the sixth round (No. 191 overall) June 5 by the Mariners in the Major League First-Year Player Draft. Lopes previously had been a UC Irvine baseball signee. He was one of three Anteater signees to sign a professional contract. Pitchers Andrew Potter and Kevin Grendell signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks and Baltimore Orioles, respectively. Earlier this month, Lopes had been named the Most Valuable Player in the Sunset League.

A pair of climbers from ClimbX Indoor Rock Gym in Huntington Beach competed at the USA Climbing Nationals July 9 through 12 in Atlanta. Nathan Withey, 12, earned a 31st-place finish and Sara Griffith, 13, placed 34th in their division, which included 334 athletes who were judged in both difficulty and speed. Griffith competed in both categories and Withey in difficulty, their coach Bryan Leipper, co-owner of ClimbX Indoor Rock Gym, said. Leipper said that Withey and Griffith had to compete in three local events to qualify for nationals.

Both Edison High seniors demand attention in the water, and now both have made plans for when their time as a Charger ends. Danielle Warde has committed to UC Irvine for women’s water polo and Chargers swim teammate Cindy Tran has committed to UC Berkeley for swimming. Warde stands out more in water polo and Tran is strictly a swimmer, but both helped lead Edison to its first ever CIF title in any aquatics sport last May. The Chargers girls captured the CIF Southern Section Division I crown at Mt. San Antonio College.

Wolfpack Blue, a local Under-12 boys? soccer club team, won its division at the Nike Harvest Cup in Irvine on Sunday. Rain washed out Friday?s scheduled games so Wolfpack Blue had to play a grueling stretch of three games Saturday. They went 2-0-1 in pool play to advance to Sunday?s final. On Sunday, Wolfpack Blue claimed the title by defeating the Irvine Strikers, 2-1, in a title match played at UC Irvine. Wolfpack Blue, which had won the Coast Soccer League Silver South bracket with a 10-2-2 record prior to entering the Nike Harvest Cup, is: Devin Anderson, Jeremy Dorff, Austin Emrich, Davis Freud, Connor Gordon, Evan Hill, Jose Huerta, Daniel Klemm, Hunter Kling, Jaiden Lottes, Jake McKinnley, Kyle McNeill, Daniel Neff and Max Simon.

Kari Pestolesi (Huntington Beach) and partner Olivia Waldowski (Irvine) were eliminated July 5 from the 2008 World University Beach Volleyball Championships in Hamburg, Germany. Pestolesi, formerly of Edison High and now an outside hitter at UC Irvine, and Waldowski finished in 17th place. The duo, representing Team USA, began the tournament on July 3 with impressive wins over Spain and Japan. Pestolesi, 19, and Waldowski, 26, the youngest Team USA tandem, were playing in their first international beach tournament.

The North Huntington Beach Black girls' Under-16 soccer team defeated host Wolfpack on penalty kicks last weekend to claim the 2007 Wolfpack Invitational tournament title at UC Irvine. NHB Black, which went 3-1 in the tournament, is composed of players from Huntington Beach, Costa Mesa, Fountain Valley, Los Alamitos, Rossmoor, Stanton and Long Beach who are prep scholar-athletes at Edison, Huntington Beach, Marina, Fountain Valley, Los Alamitos, Mater Dei, Pacifica, Long Beach Wilson and Valley Christian.
