Ocean View High began its quest Monday night for a fifth consecutive Golden West League boys' basketball championship by defeating host Costa Mesa, 56-51, in the league opener for both schools. Senior guard Casey Ortiz led the Seahawks with 21 and senior guard/forward Alan Kreymer netted 15. Ocean View, 12-3 overall heading into a Wednesday night game against league rival Orange, was up only 25-24 at the half, outscored Costa Mesa by four points in the third quarter and then held off the pesky Mustangs (3-12)

The Larry Doyle Memorial Orange County Championships, hosted by Edison and Marina high schools, culminated with championship and consolation finals held on Monday. In the 13th-place game Monday morning, Marina defeated Villa Park, 54-43. Seniors Sara Marquez, Sarah McLeod and freshman Rachel Maulit paced the Vikings, who improved to 7-4. Marquez scored seven of Marina's first 11 points in the game. "She played a great game, and we're getting good senior leadership from Sara and Sarah McLeod," Marina coach Butch Fredlow said.

The Tournament of Champions annually displays some of the top Southern California prep boys' basketball teams, and the 2002 edition of the 18-team tournament will be no exception. The event will begin Monday at Ocean View High and will run through Dec. 14, with consolation and championship bracket finals. "This tournament has featured some really outstanding teams in the past, and we have yet another strong tournament this year," Ocean View co-coach Jim Harris said.

Five Fountain Valley National Junior Basketball boys' teams won their respective playoff games last Sunday to advance in the 2001 Championship Series. The Jabberwalkies chalked up another Division I victory by routing the Brea Lakers, 50-32. Chris Debowski turned in another top-notch performance with 22 points, seven steals and five rebounds. Jeff Millard contributed eight points and pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds and Matt Derocili combined nine points with seven rebounds.

The West Huntington Beach Surf City Blues continued their winning ways Sunday with a 30-25 victory over the Santa Ana Shooting Stars in a National Junior Basketball girls 6th-grade All-Net game. The win sets up a Sunday showdown for first place against Villa Park (4-0) at Huntington Beach High. Santa Ana jumped out to an early four point lead, but Courtney Brown's six points and three steals in the second quarter helped lead Surf City to a one point halftime lead.

Fountain Valley High will play host both Friday and Saturday to one of the state's premier prep wrestling tournaments, Five Counties. Sixty-four schools will compete over the two-day period. In addition to host Fountain Valley and Edison, other county teams in the tournament include top-rated Calvary Chapel, Irvine, Dana Hills, Villa Park, and Santa Ana. "It's one of the best tournaments around and it features some outstanding teams, as well as some outstanding individual wrestlers," Edison Coach Dan Rawlins said.
