The Surf City Swoosh, an 11-and-Under Amateur Athletic Union basketball team based out of Huntington Beach and Fountain Valley, won its division at the 2010 Swoosh/AAU Las Vegas Nationals held July 16 through 18 at the Tarkanian Center in Las Vegas. Surf City beat Las Vegas Elite, 63-55, in the championship game. The Surf City Swoosh also won the 2010 West Coast Basketball Assn. National Tournament July 10 and 11 at the American Sports Center in Anaheim. Surf City beat the National Junior Basketball Stars, 65-33, in the title game.

The Huntington Beach Vikings Baseball Club 11-and-under team has tryouts underway for its 2005/06 season. The Major Division team is looking for experienced ballplayers to fill four vacated spots on its roster. To be eligible, a player's birthday must fall between May 1, 1994 and April 30, 1995. Char New water polo coach at Huntington Eugene Char has been named the new water polo coach for the boys' and girls' programs at Huntington Beach High.

Defending world and Olympic champion Aaron Peirsol, a Newport Harbor High product, will be seeking his third straight 200-meter backstroke title in today's final of the swimming world championships in Montreal. Peirsol, 22, winner of three gold medals at last summer's Olympics in Athens, Greece, posted the fastest time (1 minute, 56.60 seconds) in Thursday's semifinal to qualify. Peirsol claimed the 100 backstroke title Tuesday, making him the first man since Roland Matthes of East Germany in 1973 and 1975 to win consecutive 100 back titles a the world championships.

UC Irvine junior Tim Hutten scored four goals -- all in the first half -- to lead the No. 7-ranked Anteaters past No. 15-ranked UC Santa Barbara, 10-5, in nonconference men's water polo action Sunday at UCI. Hutten scored three times in the second quarter as the Anteaters (7-6) built an 8-2 halftime lead. Six other UCI players scored one goal each and senior goalie Joe Wynne had four saves. Travis Watts led the Gauchos (7-7) with a pair of goals, both in the first quarter.

Brashears, Austin Perry, was killed in a van accident on May 12th 2012 near Taupo, New Zealand while studying abroad with Boston University (BU). Austin was born April 16, 1991 in Los Alamitos, California. He was raised in Huntington Beach (HB), where he graduated from Marina High School in 2009 with straight A's while playing varsity water polo and volleyball. Growing up, Austin was active in his church, AYSO and the Boy Scouts of America, earning the rank of Eagle Scout. Austin was a Junior at BU majoring in Mechanical Engineering with a concentration in Environmental Technologies He was a highly active member of his community who was planning to serve as president of both the BU water polo club and the BU chapter of Tau Beta Pi (an engineering honor society)
