Andrew Edwards When school board candidate Vivian Kirkpatrick-Pilger was growing up in Westminster, local politics was a big part of family life. Her mother, Jane Kirkpatrick, was the first woman elected to the Midway City Sanitary District, where she served for 14 years. Kirkpatrick-Pilger remembered her childhood home as being "pretty darn hectic," a place that lived and breathed public policy. "I was around it a lot when I was kid, my mom had pictures of her with Howard Jarvis," Kirkpatrick-Pilger said.

Ray Mietkiewicz is back. In a big way. Fifteen days after suffering a break in his left wrist in a September 16 tie with Newport Harbor High, the Marina fullback burst back onto the football scene against Westminster last Friday, where he proceeded to shred the Lion defense in a little more than three quarters of play. Mietkiewicz, still sporting a cast encased in foam, ran wild in a performance that included 252 yards and four touchdowns in the 37th meeting between the neighboring rivals.

"We hit the ball well, played outstanding defense and had solid pitching on the mound."

Mike Sciacca, Independent All the formalities are over, not that there was any doubt, really, as to the outcome of the 2000 District 62 All-Star Majors Division Tournament. It clearly belonged to Ocean View. Wednesday night on Huntington Valley Little League's Inspiration Field, Ocean View's dominating run through district play came to an end with its lowest scoring victory in postseason play, a 4-1 victory over Westminster. The win gave Ocean View a two-game sweep of Westminster in the best-of-three series, which began Tuesday with a 9-1 Ocean View triumph.

To say that the Ocean View Little League 10-and-11-year-old All-Star team is making a statement in the 2006 District 62 All-Star Tournament would be, well, an under statement. In three tournament games leading up to a fourth game it played Wednesday (after the Independent's deadline), Ocean View had outscored its three previous opponents, 40-0. Yes, 40-0. Ocean View began the tournament ? played at Johnson Middle School, the home of Westminster Little League ? on July 1 by routing Seaview, 14-0.

When the Ocean View softball team dropped an early Golden West League showdown at home to Segerstrom in early April, it forced the Seahawks to immediately play catch-up in the chase for the 2013 league crown. That 5-0 loss on April 11 put Ocean View and Segerstrom one game behind Loara, which, in a league opener two days earlier, had edged Segerstrom, 1-0. That win gave Loara early confidence, and early league lead, as they took a 4-0 record into the final game of the first half of league play.

Once upon a time, in the 1930s and '40s, Broadway thrived on large-cast comedies packed with eccentric characters, some of which won Pulitzer prizes ("You Can't Take It With You" in 1937, "Harvey" in 1945). A decade later, John Patrick took his shot at the genre with "The Curious Savage," which didn't win the Pulitzer (that came two years later with "The Teahouse of the August Moon"), but it, along with "The Hasty Heart," proved among his more popular offerings for community theater companies.
