MICHÈLE MARR On this third day of the nine-day Jewish festival of Sukkot, which is also called the Season of Our Rejoicing, the soon-to-be sanctuary of Congregation Adat Israel is still Tyvek and framing and bare concrete floors. So following the recent High Holy Days of Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur, worshipers are observing this feast as they have for eight years — in the synagogue’s multipurpose social hall. Come late December, though, the West Orange County Chabad community plans to light the first candle of Hanukkah — or the Festival of Lights — in the long-awaited sanctuary, which is being added to its building on Warner Avenue.

Seabreeze Church beat the odds by surviving two decades and making it to its first permanent home. After a year of settling in to new digs, this Sunday the church plans to throw open its doors to the public and celebrate its success. The Huntington Beach church is in its 20th year, having begun services at Rodgers Senior Center in 1988. Senior Pastor Bevan Unrau came onboard in 1990, straight out of seminary after a career running an advertising agency. He has watched the fledgling church grow from a regular attendance of 150 at the senior center, through years meeting on Sundays at Huntington Beach Central Library, and finally to its rebuilt campus on Gothard Street, where he says about 750 people show up every Sunday.

Cynthia Frances Doe was a friend to me. She poured herself out with abandon and never kept account. She wasn’t one to call in favors after she bestowed them. I don’t believe she ever thought of the kindnesses she did as favors, regardless of personal cost. Her middle name was Frances, I discovered, but only when I saw it on the prayer card printed for her burial. Cynthia would have been delighted to know she shared the name with my maternal grandmother. She knew how much I loved the woman I grew up calling “Sissie,” how the love she had bestowed on me as a child had shaped my heart and soul.

Many church leaders have begun to take advantage of the talented actors and singers in the area to draw in new congregants by offering their divine venues as a place to share those talents. Churches in the area are experiencing a growth in their music ministries. They are attracting new congregants and generating excitement in longtime members by integrating music into Sunday services and special performances at other times, church officials said. Music ministry has always played an important role at La Ca"ada Presbyterian Church, said Tony Chunn, director of Worship, Music and Arts.
